Types of Financial Aid

Grant and Federal Aid

Full-time status required for all grants, scholarships, and fellowships— except for BGCS/Urban. (F/T = 12 or more hrs/semester.)
Part-time students may apply for Stafford Loans and BGCS/Urban.
FAFSA required for all grants, scholarships, fellowships, and Stafford Loans—except Provost Award.
(International students do not have to submit the FAFSA for a BGCS.)
Some awards also require an essay or other materials.
Some awards are for specific programs only.
Scholarships, fellowships, and grants are awarded after admission.

Student demonstrates the desire for buildling "the body of Christ" in China. If no students apply who plan to serve in China, graduate students shall be considered who demonstrate desire in building "the body of Christ" in the 10/40 window. Not available to PhD or PsyD students.
Federal Aid
Federal Stafford Loans - Subsidized	ALL	Up to $8,500	Need-based. Federally backed loans. Fixed rate. "No interest" before start of repayment or during periods of deferment. Federal government pays (subsidizes) the interest during those times. No payments while enrolled at least half-time and during subsequent six-month grace period.
Federal Stafford Loans - Unsubsidized	ALL	Up to $28,000 PhD, PsyD $20,500 MA, Cert.	Not need-based. Federally backed loans. Fixed rate. Interest accrues upon disbursement. No payments while enrolled at least half-time and during subsequent six-month grace period.
Federal Work Study	ALL	$1,000 initial award	Wages paid by federal government. Initial award might increase per available funds.
Specific Endowed Scholarships
PhD Scholarship and Research Fellowship	PHD	Full Tuition and $9,600/yr. TA stipend	Awarded to all PhD students. 6 per year
PsyD Scholarship	PSD	$5,000 or $10,000/yr.	Awarded to all PsyD students. Amount determined by psychology department.
Provost Award	MA	$3,000 or 4,000	MA student in any program. GPA 3.8 or higher. GRE or MAT scores. Diversity (includes ethnicity, life experience, career goals)
W. Ross and Amilee Phillips Scholarship	MA	$2,000-4,000	First-year MA student (one year award) Student in Biblical Exegesis, Christian Formation & Ministry, History of Christianity, Intercultural Studies, Intercultural Studies & TESOL, or Theology. Plans for ministry among underprivileged or poor in America. Application and essay required. Full criteria.
Janice Harrison Endowed Scholarship	MCP	$1,000-3,000	MA in Clinical Psychology. Diversity.
Research Fellowship
Wheaton Center for Early Christian Studies Research Fellowship	THE HC	Full Tuition	Application Application for Research Fellowship Deadline: March 15 Fellowship Criteria Student in either MA in Theology or MA in History of Christianity. Plans to pursue PhD focusing on Early Christianity. Must complete an MA thesis on Early Christianity. Responsibilities include 10 hrs./wk. assisting the WCECS with its research and functions. Benefactors: Drs. Frank and Julie Papatheofanis.
Billy Graham Center Scholarship (BGCS)—Loan forgiveness program (BGCS Newsletters)
BGCS - Furloughing Missionaries	MA	Full Tuition	Deadline: Nov. 1 for fall. For both US citizens and citizens of other countries.
BGCS - International Christian Leaders	MA	Full Tuition and help with cost of living	Deadline: Nov. 1 for fall. For citizens of countries other than the US.
BGCS - Health Care Workers	MA	Full Tuition	Deadline: Nov. 1 for fall. International Health Care workers please submit International Christian Leaders application. American Medical Missionaries please submit Furloughing Missionary application.
BGCS - Pre-Field Missionary Candidates	MA	Average award: $3,000/semester	Deadline: Mar. 1 for fall, Sep. 15 for spring. For US citizens and permanent residents.
BGCS - Urban Ministry Leaders	MA	Full Tuition	Deadline: Mar. 1 for fall, Sep. 15 for spring. For both US citizens and permanent residents doing urban ministry in US. For both part-time and full-time students. Urban = Community that has (1) ethnicity, (2) density of population, and (3) low-income status. The location of the community does not have to be inner-city. Benefactor: Kenneth T. Wessner Ethnic/Urban Missions Scholarship Fund
Graduate Assistantships
In an Academic Department	ALL	Hourly wage. 10 hrs./wk. max.	In general, 2nd-semester students given preference. Title: Graduate Assistant
In Residence Life	MA*	One free class/ semester, free housing, stipend, other part-time employee benefits.	Applications in by Feb. 1 given preference. Residence Life experience strongly preferred. Wheaton Installment Plan

Right of Appeal

If you receive a financial aid award and feel that the determination of financial need is not sufficient, you might be able to appeal the decision. To initiate an appeal, contact your financial-aid counselor. Your counselor will determine whether options for additional aid consideration are available. You might be asked to provide supporting documentation. Appeals regarding the determination of financial need must contain new or additional facts not considered at the time need was determined.

Employment

Wheaton and the surrounding areas offer numerous opportunities for employment. On-campus jobs are also available. The Graduate Student Services Office and Career Services provide job listings for suitable part-time employment.

Denominations

Some denominations have scholarships or loan programs for students preparing for full-time Christian ministries. For further information, contact your denomination's headquarters.

Veteran's Benefits

Financial aid is available to veterans and their families through the G.I. Bill, War Orphans Educational Law, and other programs. Spouses and children of deceased or totally disabled veterans are eligible for educational benefits. Contact your local Veterans Administration Office for more information. Students eligible to receive veterans benefits should complete the necessary forms in the Registrar's Office to certify enrollment to the Veterans Administration. Government checks might not be available for two to three months after application.

Many companies have a tuition reimbursement program for their employees. Be sure to check with your company's Human Resources Department.

NHSC Loan Repayment Program—for PsyD or MA Clinical Psychology, post-license

The National Health Service Corps offers up to $50,000 to licensed health professionals in exchange for two years of service at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Funds are tax-free and given as a lump sum. The NHSC is part of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which is an Agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
